This is the residential remodel plan for a split-level house designed by Chien-Hung Lu. The project, located in New Taipei City, Taiwan, was completed on February 8th, 2019. The design concept revolves around the idea of photosynthesis, where space and light interact to create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.
The front area on the lower floor serves as an open public space, comprising the dining room, kitchen, and living room. Natural materials such as marbles, painted iron adornments, walnuts, teaks, and engineered hardwood floorings are used to create a harmonious color palette of black, white, and gray. The combination of these materials and the thoughtful arrangement of paints and oaks contribute to the overall aesthetic of the indoor scenes.
What sets this design apart is its emphasis on maximizing natural light. The split-level house benefits from an extraordinary geographic environment, providing ample sunlight. The remodel plan takes full advantage of this natural resource. The color tones of black, white, and gray, along with minimal wood accents, allow the lights and shades to become the focal point of the house's decoration.
The design also incorporates specific features and technologies to enhance the overall experience. The TV wall, made of gray marbles and complemented by white walls, adds a touch of elegance to the living area. The captivating family activity area is adorned with dark oak walls and a walnut long table, creating a non-chroma space that exudes warmth and comfort. The neat and straight lines throughout the public area contribute to a concise and modern style. The scattering of daylight in this area creates unique and ever-changing scenes throughout the day.
One of the challenges faced by the designer was accommodating the different aesthetic preferences of the two sons of the house owner. The private area, located at the rear of the house, was designed to reflect their individual tastes in textures and aesthetics. This aspect of the design adds a layer of complexity and uniqueness to the overall interior design plan.
The project spans a property of 180 square meters and showcases the designer's meticulous attention to detail. The distinct perspectives on materials and aesthetics are evident throughout the three rooms, each distinctly embellished with light black, dark walnut color, and dark gray. The iron adornments comprehensively ornamented in the house accentuate the specific characteristics of the spaces.
The exceptional design of Photosynthesis of Space has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, this design contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
